The Gardens is truly a gem! From the moment you walk in, the ambience is one of peace and calm in a lush and lovely setting. The rooms are generous in size and wheelchair-friendly, and many have beautiful views of the courtyard and small private patios for mini gardens. There is a restaurant-style dining room serving up award-winning meals--and ample desserts! The activity and living rooms have a cozy, family feel, and there is always something going on in the way of games, fun exercise classes, lectures, movie showings, field trips, and special events.
The greatest asset, of course, is the patient and caring staff of the family-owned facility. Community Relations Director Jonathan is warm and welcoming. Health Services Director Laura is professional and generous with her time. Javier the Dining Services Director takes pride in his cuisine. The caregivers are loving and nurturing, and they keep lines of communication open.
But perhaps the best indicator of the quality of The Gardens is how happy the residents are. They extol the virtues of the place with no prompting. (One woman said she'd tried five different facilities, and this was the best.) They're eager to welcome new residents into the family--by the third day, lunch-goers were calling my mom by name to sit at their table.
As with most assisted living places, there is a sliding scale of services based upon need, and when a transition to a higher level of care is required, Safe Haven offers memory care with a higher caregiver-to-patient ratio. Safe Haven is safe and secure, with its own small garden and dining area. Caregivers encourage residents to spend most of their day in activities with others rather than remaining isolated in their rooms.
I'm delighted I found this new home for my mom. She's still in the process of settling in--she's been there just under two weeks--but I can already sense this is a perfect place for her.
The cost of assisted living in the Los Angeles area can vary a lot. It depends on factors like location, facility type, amenities, and the needed level of care. The median cost of assisted living in the Los Angeles area is $5,748 per month, according to the 2023 Genworth Cost of Care Survey[1].
The high cost of living in Los Angeles drives up the prices for assisted living there. Los Angeles scores 161.7 on the cost of living index, which is above the state average of 149.9 and significantly higher than the national median of 100.
To understand the costs better, you must tell apart the two main types of assisted living facilities in California. They are assisted living communities and board and care homes.
Assisted living communities, such as Sunrise Senior Living, Brookdale, and Belmont Village, operate like hotels with caregivers on-site. These communities typically have a base rent. It can range from $2,900 to $13,000 per month. The range depends on the unit size and amenities. The base rent covers the apartment and utilities. It also covers housekeeping, meals, activities, transportation, and 24-hour on-site monitoring.
Additionally, there is a separate cost for care services. It varies based on the resident’s needs. For example, one resident may only need medication management. Another might need full assistance with daily activities. This help includes incontinence care and transferring to a wheelchair.
Board and care homes, also called residential care homes, offer care in small, six-bed facilities within neighbourhoods. They cater to people with high physical needs or memory issues who might not fit in larger communities.
Typically, board and care homes have two caregivers for every six residents, ensuring better care. Costs range from $3,000 to $9,000 per month, covering services.
In Los Angeles, location greatly affects assisted living costs. Properties in places like Beverly Hills or near the beach are costlier. This mirrors the broader real estate trends in Los Angeles.
Costs can change due to inflation or demand. Therefore, it’s wise to talk to a senior living advisor for the latest details. They can also guide on services and financial aid, like the Medi-Cal Assisted Living Waiver for low-income seniors.
The Multipurpose Senior Services Program is a statewide benefit. It helps frail seniors. They would be unable to live alone at home. The program helps seniors get the support they need to live in the community. It also helps them avoid nursing homes too soon. The program has an enrollment cap, so seniors may need to join a waiting list.
To be eligible, applicants must:
Seniors wishing to apply for the MSSP or a Medi-Cal waiver can contact the CA Aging and Adult Information Line at (800) 510-2020. Alternatively, you can apply online. Or, you can apply in person at the senior’s local health organization.

Seniors who choose assisted living facilities in Los Angeles have many unique options before them. You or your loved one can choose a facility that offers various levels of on-site care services, a smaller care community that features a homelike setting, or even a facility that identifies with a specific cultural background. There’s also an abundance of resort-style assisted living communities in Los Angeles, especially in areas like Beverly Hills and in the heart of Los Angeles.
About 37% of A Place for Mom’s assisted living communities in Los Angeles offer on-site memory care services, which cater to residents who have Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia. These communities offer uniquely structured environments, highly-trained caregivers, and specialized cognitive therapies.
When seniors choose an assisted living facility that also offers memory care services, the specialized services may be offered in the same residence, in another wing of the facility, or in a different on-campus building. The benefit of choosing such a facility is that seniors don’t have to worry about moving to a different community should their cognitive care needs change.
Los Angeles also has many assisted living options that offer a more relaxed and homelike setting, which differs from larger facilities. Often referred to as board and care homes or residential care homes, these assisted living options provide the same level of assistance in a residential home. The difference is that these homes typically house fewer residents, meaning each senior can receive a more personalized level of care in an intimate setting. Within our Los Angeles assisted living network, approximately 30% of communities are care homes.
Some areas in Los Angeles have assisted living communities rooted in different faiths and cultures. For example, there are several Jewish assisted living communities in the Beverly Hills area offering Kosher-certified kitchens, Jewish cuisine, and religious services. Some are also located near synagogues and churches for seniors who wish to practice their faith outside of their assisted living facility. Los Angeles also has assisted living communities inspired by East Asian cultures, some of which are located in or near Little Tokyo.
There are many highly sought-after Los Angeles neighborhoods where seniors can find luxurious amenities combined with the daily care they need. Often nestled among high-end shopping districts, upscale dining establishments, and highly-rated medical centers, these Los Angeles assisted living facilities have much to offer.
Start each day with a chef-prepared, gourmet meal in a restaurant-style dining venue. Then, take a dip in an outdoor swimming pool or attend an exercise class in a professionally supervised fitness center. Join new friends for an afternoon of high tea, or pamper yourself in an on-site beauty salon and barbershop.
Many of these communities are also pet-friendly, so residents can treat their furry friends to a spa session at the dog wash station or take them on a stroll through the pristinely landscaped grounds. Some resort-style communities even offer perks such as a limousine service and personal shoppers.
