I visited Gardens at Northridge. It was nice. It was clean. The people and staff were nice. They have a library area and a lobby for people to stay in, quite large, I like it. I want an area of the site where people could gather and play games. They had like a little shelf outside of each door where people would put flowers or decorate their door itself. I enjoyed my time there. The staff was very attentive and looked out.
The cost of assisted living in the Los Angeles area can vary a lot. It depends on factors like location, facility type, amenities, and the needed level of care. The median cost of assisted living in the Los Angeles area is $5,748 per month, according to the 2023 Genworth Cost of Care Survey.
The high cost of living in Los Angeles drives up the prices for assisted living there. Los Angeles scores 161.7 on the cost of living index, which is above the state average of 149.9 and significantly higher than the national median of 100.
To understand the costs better, you must tell apart the two main types of assisted living facilities in California. They are assisted living communities and board and care homes.
Assisted living communities, such as Sunrise Senior Living, Brookdale, and Belmont Village, operate like hotels with caregivers on-site. These communities typically have a base rent. It can range from $2,900 to $13,000 per month. The range depends on the unit size and amenities. The base rent covers the apartment and utilities. It also covers housekeeping, meals, activities, transportation, and 24-hour on-site monitoring.
Additionally, there is a separate cost for care services. It varies based on the resident’s needs. For example, one resident may only need medication management. Another might need full assistance with daily activities. This help includes incontinence care and transferring to a wheelchair.
Board and care homes, also called residential care homes, offer care in small, six-bed facilities within neighbourhoods. They cater to people with high physical needs or memory issues who might not fit in larger communities.
Typically, board and care homes have two caregivers for every six residents, ensuring better care. Costs range from $3,000 to $9,000 per month, covering services.
In Los Angeles, location greatly affects assisted living costs. Properties in places like Beverly Hills or near the beach are costlier. This mirrors the broader real estate trends in Los Angeles.
Costs can change due to inflation or demand. Therefore, it’s wise to talk to a senior living advisor for the latest details. They can also guide on services and financial aid, like the Medi-Cal Assisted Living Waiver for low-income seniors.
The Multipurpose Senior Services Program is a statewide benefit. It helps frail seniors. They would be unable to live alone at home. The program helps seniors get the support they need to live in the community. It also helps them avoid nursing homes too soon. The program has an enrollment cap, so seniors may need to join a waiting list.
To be eligible, applicants must:

Seniors who choose assisted living facilities in Los Angeles have many unique options before them. You or your loved one can choose a facility that offers various levels of on-site care services, a smaller care community that features a homelike setting, or even a facility that identifies with a specific cultural background. There’s also an abundance of resort-style assisted living communities in Los Angeles, especially in areas like Beverly Hills and in the heart of Los Angeles.
About 37% of A Place for Mom’s assisted living communities in Los Angeles offer on-site memory care services, which cater to residents who have Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia. These communities offer uniquely structured environments, highly-trained caregivers, and specialized cognitive therapies.
When seniors choose an assisted living facility that also offers memory care services, the specialized services may be offered in the same residence, in another wing of the facility, or in a different on-campus building. The benefit of choosing such a facility is that seniors don’t have to worry about moving to a different community should their cognitive care needs change.
Los Angeles also has many assisted living options that offer a more relaxed and homelike setting, which differs from larger facilities. Often referred to as board and care homes or residential care homes, these assisted living options provide the same level of assistance in a residential home. The difference is that these homes typically house fewer residents, meaning each senior can receive a more personalized level of care in an intimate setting. Within our Los Angeles assisted living network, approximately 30% of communities are care homes.
Some areas in Los Angeles have assisted living communities rooted in different faiths and cultures. Then, take a dip in an outdoor swimming pool or attend an exercise class in a professionally supervised fitness center. Join new friends for an afternoon of high tea, or pamper yourself in an on-site beauty salon and barbershop.
Many of these communities are also pet-friendly, so residents can treat their furry friends to a spa session at the dog wash station or take them on a stroll through the pristinely landscaped grounds. Some resort-style communities even offer perks such as a limousine service and personal shoppers.
